On one weekend, I drove by the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, a home to one of the last populations of critically endangered Attwater's prairie chicken.

The refuge is located about 60 miles west of Houston. According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, they were one of the most abundant local birds in the Texas tall grass prairies.
